PAINTED STORIES ETCHED IN STONE

Long before roads and lodges, the San and Koi people moved through these valleys, following wildlife and leaving behind quiet traces of their lives.

At NTONI, you can visit one of these ancient sites, an experience as humbling as it is memorable. Your journey begins at the Roxburgh lodge and heads south through Wilgekloof. After a drive along a steep mountain trail, you’ll hike down into a deep valley with a small stream winding through it.

Following a challenging but rewarding climb, you’ll arrive beneath a rocky overhang, sheltered from the sun and wind, where rock paintings still whisper stories of ancient hunts, painted by hands long gone.

Figures of hunters, eland, and other wildlife are etched into the stone, offering a window into the region’s rich human past. Step back in time and discover the ancient Bushman paintings at NTONI.
