How to Identify the Greater Kudu in the Field
The greater kudu is a large antelope with a narrow body, long legs, and a coat that ranges from greyish brown to light reddish brown. Its torso shows distinct vertical white stripes. Bulls are noticeably larger than cows and carry long spiral horns that form up to two and a half turns. Cows are lighter in colour and hornless. Kudus move quietly through dense vegetation and are known for their alert behaviour. The greater kudu is a prestigious member of the “Spiral Horn Grand Slam.”

The greater kudu occurs across southern Africa and prefers landscapes that offer both cover and accessible forage. Typical habitats include wooded hillsides, savannah, and thick bush areas with reliable shelter. At Ntoni, kudus are found throughout the reserve, especially in valleys, ridges, and mixed vegetation zones where they move between shade and open feeding areas.

How the Greater Kudu Lives in Our Hunting Environment
Kudu is one of the key species on Ntoni and a frequent sight during early morning and late afternoon outings. Hunts focus on mature bulls, and your professional hunter determines which animal is suitable for harvest. We recommend a .30-06 Springfield or a .300 Winchester Magnum, as both calibres perform well on the size and build of this species. Because kudu are sensitive to movement and sound, hunts often require careful positioning and the use of natural cover.
