How to Identify the Grey Rhebok in the Field
The grey rhebok/vaal rhebok, is a medium-sized antelope native to South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini. Adult animals weigh 19–30 kg (42–66 lb) and show a long neck, narrow ears and a short, dense coat in various shades of grey. This woolly coat helps them cope with colder, higher terrain.
Only males carry horns. These horns are straight, sharp and ringed at the base, reaching 15–25 cm (5.9–9.8 in). Their slim build and upright stance make them easy to distinguish from other antelope species in the region.
Habitat
Where Grey Rhebok Live and How They Handle Harsh Conditions
Grey rhebok generally live in higher areas, often 1,000 m (3,300 ft) above sea level. They prefer grassy, montane habitats such as sourveld. Because these regions are cold and windy, their dense coat acts as insulation.
However, the species is not restricted to high ground. They also occur along the Cape coastal belt, sometimes nearly at sea level. Their ability to switch between these environments shows strong adaptability across varied terrain.
Behaviour
How Grey Rhebok Form Groups and Defend Territory
This species live in small herds of one mature male with one to fifteen females and young. As a result, the species is polygynous. Males become highly aggressive during the breeding season and hold territories through scent marking, upright postures and active patrols.
They are browsers that obtain most of their water from the plants they eat. Therefore, they can feed far from permanent water sources. Their quiet behaviour, strong territorial habits and ability to thrive in steep terrain make them a distinctive species within Southern Africa’s highland antelope.
